Budget Plan Approved for the 2023-24 School Year
VICTORIA, BC 鈥� The Board of Education has approved the budget development process for the 2023/2024 school year. The operating budget is expected to be more than $210 million.
The budget prioritizes student learning and aligns resources with strategic and operational goals that focus on creating culturally responsive learning environments that support all learners鈥� personal and academic success. The budget plan aims to ensure public engagement remains meaningful and that all decisions are transparent, fully informed, and lead to sustainable outcomes.
鈥淭his plan builds on the comprehensive budget process from the previous school year and sets the new Board up for success,鈥� said Board Chair Ryan Painter. 鈥淭here are many important considerations and complexities involved in allocating the budget. It requires balance, addressing shortfalls, and investment in areas of learning that require the most attention. The budget must serve the best interest of all students. By having an established plan in place for the new Board, Trustees can come in and immediately focus on orienting themselves to the opportunities and challenges, and listening to the needs and desires of the learning community.鈥�
The plan includes a budget advisory committee that will convene in early November. Membership is comprised of trustees, senior staff including members of the Victoria Principals and Vice Principals Association (VPVPA) along with representatives from the Songhees Nation, Esquimalt Nation, M茅tis Nation of Greater Victoria, the Urban Peoples鈥� House Indigenous Advisory, Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Greater Victoria Teachers鈥� Association (GVTA), Allied Specialist Association (ASA) and Victoria Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils (VCPAC).
Between November 2022 and April 2023, the District will be providing opportunities to connect students, staff, administrators, the Four Houses, parents and guardians, along with members of the public, to provide input and learn more about resource allocation. The District will host facilitated discussions, public meetings and a student symposium.
The Board intends to approve its 2023-2024 budget in April 2023.
